When I lived in Florida sometimes I met people who told me I had to get right with God I didn’t pay them much mind but all these years later it seems maybe they were on to something after all but look here I would take it even further God being a little too vague and too general to be of much use to me too hard for me to tell what direction God is tending toward from one day to the next instead I would say each morning you should look and listen and try find out what is there what is most fully present for you like the white birches outside the window or the chipmunks running on the terrace or the breeze swaying the branches of the trees or even a thunderstorm with its ripping winds and then pick your allies among the things you can see and feel and get right with them follow them and practice these chosen allegiances in your mind and heart and let them be clear in you as the ringing of a bell on a summer day your salvation may depend on it it helps to be loyal to something that’s real each day you can choose anything and claim it as your own kin and kith that is your power and if you can get really right with one thing you can get right with everything go ahead and choose.
